It’s Christmastime in the City!

postcard-frontThe Arms Family Museum in Youngstown Ohio is sparkling for the holiday season!   Memories of Christmas Past, the annual holiday spectacular, is in its sixth year in the 1905 Arts & Crafts mansion of Olive and Wilford Arms, and the home of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society.  The seven period rooms of the Arms Family home are filled to the brim with rare, one-of-a-kind, vintage decorations that include ornaments, lighting, trees, toys and trains.  This display features many pieces from the Historical Society’s collection as well as items on loan from private collectors.

Months of preparation and hundreds of man hours go into the holiday exhibit.  This year’s all new display features collections from thirteen local Christmas enthusiasts; a display from Boardman resident John Garver, inventor of the 1950′s iconic Twinkler heat motion Christmas ornament, made locally by the Plakie Toy Company; and a special tribute collection of the late Dr. Angelo Petrolla.

Memories of Christmas Past received special recognition from The Golden Glow, a Christmas collector’s organization.  The Arms Family Museum and its volunteers were honored with the 2012 Ambassador of the Year Award in recognition of the museum’s love of Christmas and sharing it with others.  Several members of The Golden Glow lend their collections to the display.

Visitors to the 2011 exhibit called the display “like something out of New York City – it’s so elaborate and detailed it’s impossible to see everything in just one walk-through.”  Visitors are welcome on the self guided tour to make multiple passes through the period rooms as well as visit the second floor local history exhibits.  The Anne Kilcawley Christman Hands-On History Room will feature an old-fashioned 19th Century Christmas with period artifacts, decorations and craft projects.

  1. We noticed you had a program last year, “Longing to be Home, Christmas During the Civil War.” Is there a contact for the person/persons that did this? We need to schedule a program for our December meeting on the 10th. The program we did had to be cancelled. Thank you.

  2. Thanks to everyone who made Memories of Christmas Past a reality! I enjoy strolling through the Arms Museum and seeing all the vintage Christmas decorations – some of which I remember seeing in my grandparents’ homes when I was a child. Memories of Christmas Past elicits feelings of nostalgia against the backdrop of the Arms’ beautiful home. I especially enjoyed seeing the Plakie Twinkler ornaments and learning more about them this year. Looking forward to next year’s display!
